On this page
OnixOS is an open-source Linux distribution. It uses pacman for package transactions, OnixOS repositories for project packages, and profiles to assemble different live images. These guides cover installation, package management, system configuration, profiles and the build system.
O Language is a related open-source project maintained in its own repository. It can be used alongside OnixOS; it is not a prerequisite for installing or using the distribution. Its language guide has a separate learning path.
Getting Started
Start with the first page and continue through installation and the package tools.
- Getting started explains the image choices and the first boot.
- Installation identifies the installer for each profile.
- Package management covers pacman,
opkg, upgrades and package installation. - Repositories explains the OnixOS mirrors and pacman configuration.
For help after installation, continue to system configuration or troubleshooting.
Installation
Installer behavior differs by profile. The installation guide explains the Core, desktop, Server and fallback paths.
Package Management
Manage packages with pacman and the OnixOS opkg helper. The guide covers installation, upgrades and package source.
Repositories
Configure OnixOS repositories and understand mirror paths, architecture directories and signature settings.
Building From Scratch
The Building From Scratch guide follows the Wiki entry point. The detailed clean-checkout walkthrough covers package and image stages from their configured inputs. Use the build-system guide and command reference for responsibilities, options and outputs.
System and project references
These references explain how a package becomes part of an installed system.
- System architecture — packages, repositories, profiles and images.
- Profile reference — standard images, additional projects and profile files.
- Package and profile map — shared and profile-specific package selections.
- Package catalog — package groups, project sources and package pages.
- Active package inventory — the current source-list snapshot and its limits.
Build or contribute
Use these guides when changing the source that produces a package or image.
- Build from a clean checkout — follow package and image stages from their configured inputs.
- Build OnixOS — build-system responsibilities and architecture targets.
- Build system reference — commands, configuration files and artifact paths.
- Package build reference — PKGBUILD metadata and how a package enters a repository.
- Developing a profile — package lists, overlays, boot files and installer choices.
- Source repositories — find the repository that owns a component.
The flow is: package sources become repository packages; a profile selects those packages and adds its own configuration; the build system assembles and collects the resulting image. The architecture guide expands each step.
OnixOS image references
Stable images are published on SourceForge; the Development release is hosted in OnixOS Public Files. The Download page links both locations and the separate Docker, Vagrant and package repository resources.
